Does DVI Support Audio? How can you use HDML to DVI  and get audio?


Many situations require connecting your computer to the TV. The easiest way to combine these two devices is to use a Digital Visual Interface or DVI. DVI enables the smooth transfer of digital video content and is thus the most favorable one.

So the question now is will DVI support audio. The answer depends greatly on what type of DVI cable you are using. If you are working with a digital signal, you may need a regular physical adapter, and if the signal is analog, an active adapter will be required.

What is DVI?

Before DVI was introduced, VGA ports did the work of transmitting video content. But the introduction of DVI completely changed the scenario and standardized the method of transmitting video, and the result was high-quality video at the display end.

The video images transferred by DVI cables offer a 1200 x 1920 even though the cables are longer than the ones used for VGA. With a 15 feet cable, a repeater is often required to make up for the loss of signal quality. Thus DVI can be called a successor of VGA.

What Are The Different DVI Cables?

 Different kinds of DVI cables are available in stores that fulfill different purposes. You cannot say that one cable is better than the others. Each of them has a different purpose and can be used to cater to the computer’s needs.

Whichever cable you decide to use, there is no guarantee that audio will be transmitted along video content. It is the user’s creativity that makes this happen. Take a look at the different DVI cables.

  • DVI-I

DVI-I cables can work with both analog and digital signals. This cable can be perfect if you wish to transfer old video to the new interfaces of digital devices. As these cables can read both analog and digital signals, old videos can be transmitted as they are without any data loss.

  • DVI-D

DVI-D cables are more popular than the other cables available. They help transmit both audio and video simultaneously, but a little tweaking can make the process smoother. When the digital signal is strong, as seen in the current scenario, it is ideal to use DVI-D cables. These cables come as a boon for modern users who multitask as the length is just perfect. It can stretch and still work fine by neither affecting the quality of the video nor causing any problem to the data transfer.

  • DVI-A

DVI-A cables can read only analog signals. If you thought that these are useless in a digital world, you are wrong. Many users still use these cables and are pretty satisfied with their performance. The cable is useful in connecting old video sources to new ones. If you don’t think much about technology, then these cables are also good enough to get quality videos at the display end.        

Transferring Audio Using DVI

If You Have An Old Video Card

Old video cards may not support transmission as fast as new ones as their working is generally slower. To combat this issue, you can use a DVI-d to HDMI converter. Depending on the configuration requirements, HDMI cables may or may not be compatible with this. So, the two devices must match in their capacities.

If there is a mismatch between the devices, the transmission will be affected. For instance, an old TV cannot play the original sound of a video with surround sound. But for newer video cards, this transmission is smoother.

DVI With External Cables

If you think of adding external cables, you can go for RCA or Aux cables. This helps connect your computer to any DVI port of the television. Some of us don’t prefer adding extra wires just because of the mess they might create. But the additional cable can actually make the transmission easy.    

For a complete audio experience, you can buy a 3.5mm to RCA, which is an excellent match for Xbox consoles and PS3. These devices are very useful, and they don’t take much time to configure.

If The Graphics Card Doesn’t Support DVI Audio

Having a graphics card that does not support DVI is a common issue many faces. This issue can be dealt with by using a DVI to HDMI adapter that uses external power. This is necessary to transmit audio successfully. It is advised to keep the graphic software updated to support the latest audio version.

For instance, transmitting DVI to the TV audio can be done using a DVI-I to HDMI active adapter. Usually, in this case, the signal is weak, for which you may require external power.

Interestingly, there is no single way to ensure audio transmission with DVI. You will have to analyze the capabilities of your computer to decide what is best for it. One of the best options is to use a DVI cable that delivers the best results. This way, both audio and video will be carried over simultaneously.
