How Do I Fix Invalid Format?

So you’ve come across an invalid format. How do you go about fixing it? Also, you should be aware of what an invalid format is in the first place!

So my PC has been acting up lately and how I fixed it can serve as a teachable moment to many others who’ve suffered the same fate. Stop me if this sounds familiar to you. So I boot up my PC but I get an “Invalid Format” error before it could get to Windows.

How Do I Fix Invalid Format?

The “Invalid Format” error implies that I’m having a video issue. If you’re having the same issue than me, it might be because you have incorrect resolution settings or a bad driver. The Windows installation itself is probably fine and you won’t need to reinstall Windows.

Some so-called troubleshooters err on the side of caution and do the whole reformat and reinstall of Windows anyway as long as all of your files have been backed up and whatnot.

The Manufacturer’s Logo

If you see the manufacturer’s logo before getting the “Invalid Format” error message then do the following. As the logo disappears and Windows tries to load itself, press and hold your power button for 5-10 seconds for a Hard Shut Down.

Now do this again for a second time. Restart, press the power button for a Hard Shut Down. On the third start, your Windows installation should boot into Recovery Mode and from there you’ll gain access to Command Prompt, Safe Mode, and System Repair.

Attempt a System Restore

While in Recovery Mode, go to “Troubleshoot”, “Advanced Option”, and “System Restore”. Check if it has made a restore point you can go to in order to get your PC running back to settings where  the “Invalid Format” error isn’t appearing.

Startup Settings

If you lack a Restore Point, go to “Troubleshoot”, “Advanced Option”, and “Startup Settings” instead in order to click “Restart”. After restart has happened, Press 4 to go to “Safe Mode”. Once you’ve accessed Safe Mode, backup your data from there and attempt fixing video settings on that level.

Display Device Driver

Open your Device Manager to check your Display Device Driver. Just right click on your Desktop, choose “Display Settings” on the ensuing menu, and then check your Resolution so that it’s the one that’s marked as recommended for your PC.

Reboot the PC to see if this fixes the issue and Windows will load normally. If this still doesn’t help you then you may go ahead with a reformat and reinstallation attempt. Just make sure all your files are backed up and your latest application installers are located in one USB drive.

Final Things to Consider

It can get tough to try and fix video resolution from your PC without a monitor and with an “Invalid Format” error blocking your way. However, with enough know-how, you too can find your way to “Display Settings” in order to fix this relatively simple error issue.

Contact a certified technician for PC repair of for your specific brand of PC when push comes to shove and you can’t fix the issue by yourself in a DIY manner any longer.
