Does HDMI to DVI carry audio?


Cables have changed size and shape and come in different forms to suit different devices. Most modern devices like computers and high-definition televisions come with cables and ports that make them compatible with many smart devices. The computer monitors have DVI ports and HDTVs and other components that makeup home theatres use HDMI cables and connectors.

These days, data transfer happens using both DVI and HDMI cables that are widely popular because of their usability. While both these cables can transmit video signals, only HDMI can carry over video and audio signals. DVI cables transfer only video signals and not audio.

This is not a big issue if the cables are used for their designated purposes. But when there is a need to transfer video and audio data between a computer or Play Station 4 or 5 and video components such as TV, monitor, you may need HDMI to DVI adapters or cables.

Digital Video Interface or DVI ports are increasingly seen on PC monitors and its primary purpose is to transmit high-resolution video between computers and monitors. You can also find them on many video components including video projectors.   

DVI replaced VGA ports and the result was a change in benchmark when it comes to transferring video. With DVI, the video received at the display end tends to be of high quality. A DVI-D dual link cable can transmit video with the resolution of up to 2560 x 1600. As DVI does not carry audio signals, a separate cable is always required to move the audio data whenever DVI is being used.

High-Definition Multimedia Interface or HDMI transfers uncompressed audio and video signals using cables that connect computer monitors, televisions, and other components that are connected to them. The digital data that is being carried is not changed or compressed in any way meaning the original signal is obtained at the receiving end. The latest versions of HDMI cables enable the transfer of 4K and 3D video signals.

Why Connect HDMI To DVI?

Previously, we used devices like television and computers for their intended purposes like watching movies and browsing the internet respectively. When technology is advanced, there aren’t many restrictions when using these devices. For example, you can connect your computer to the television to watch stored movies on a bigger screen or you can watch contents from the cable on your laptop.

People are increasingly watching movies and shows from streaming services by connecting computers to TVs. This is usually done when you don’t have a smart TV. There are also instances where you may have to connect a video projector that has a DVI port to an HDMI source.

All these requirements call for cables that make the devices compatible with each other. As the computers and TVs or projectors have no matching connectors, these cables carry data between them and make the process easier.

Connecting The Devices Using HDMI To DVI Cables

The HDMI and DVI ports and connectors don’t look even the least similar even though both can be used to transfer video content. You cannot connect these two ports either with an HDMI cable or a DVI cable. The only solution is buying an HDMI to DVI cable or an HDMI to DVI adapter.

The better option will be an HDMI to DVI cable that need not be connected to an adapter. But if you have an HDMI to DVI adapter, you can even use that provided you have a spare DVI or HDMI cable that can be dedicatedly used with the adapter.

The HDMI to DVI cables have male and female connectors like every other electrical component. You will find that your device will mostly have the female connectors or ports. The next thing you need are cables that are male-to-male and have DVI plug on one end and HDMI plug on the other. Naturally, this will make for a smooth connection between the two devices and the data transfer happens effectively.

The only drawback is that DVI supports only video, so no audio signal is transmitted in this case. To resolve this issue, you can resort to an audio cable that can be plugged into both the devices. First find out what type of audio jacks are provided in the devices and buy audio cables accordingly. You can use a mini plug, a phone plug or an RCA cable for this purpose. When Buying An HDMI To DVI Cable

Purchasing an HDMI to DVI cable can be easy if you are a pro at it. But for others, there is a simple piece of advice: expensive cables do not mean the highest quality video. You can buy any HDMI to DVI cable that meets the industry standards for the video signals. Don’t fall for the cables that boast of providing the highest quality video if you pay the highest price.

The important thing is that the cable is long enough to connect the devices and meets the required specifications. As DVI and HDMI are backward compatible, you can even work with HDMI 2.0 connector at one end and DVI-D on the other end. It is just perfect to transfer digital content.

Remember that if the DVI cables are longer than 15 feet, you may not be able to send videos that have resolutions higher than 1080p. It is also seen that for cables longer than 50 feet, HDMI signal degradation is a major issue. Check if the connectors at both ends are gold-plated to prevent corrosion and enable easy signal transfer.    

With technology, anything is possible today but you have to do the right research. Connecting HDMI to DVI is easy using a cable or adapter but you have to take care of the audio as well. There are very good audio cables you can buy form stores that do not compromise with the quality of sound.
