There a quite a few video interfaces that work excellently in connecting your PC to a monitor. Among these, Digital Video Interface or DVI is an important connection method that has been in use for some time. Choosing between DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort is indeed a task that dictates the quality of the output.

Previously when gamers and other users were not very particular about high resolution and the like, the choice was easy. As there are a few differences between how these interfaces work, a lot of thought should go into which one is best for you, depending on your requirement.

Understanding What Is DVI

DVI is a display interface that transmits only video data making it dissimilar to DisplayPort and HDMI. It is commonly used for connecting to displays more so because the three interfaces are almost similar when it comes to what they have to offer. There are two formats of DVI – single-link and dual-link, out of which dual-link are more flexible in what it carries.

DVI and 1080p Monitors

1080p 60Hz monitors work well with all three interfaces discussed above, including DVI. Even though the fact remains that DisplayPort and HDMI better support ultra-high definition resolutions, DVI works pretty well with 1080p monitors too.

Playing games on a 1080p 144Hz monitor is possible with DVI as with the other two interfaces. The only limitation is that a single-link DVI cable may not support a refresh rate of 144Hz at 1080p resolution. For this to be viable, you will have to use a dual-link DVI cable that promises the best performance.

Choosing The Right Interface

There isn’t much difference between HDMI, DisplayPort, and DVI except for a few minor ones, but one interface can be better than the other two according to your gaming requirements. Gameplay at 1080p and 60Hz or 1080p and 144Hz can be smooth irrespective of your interface.

We recommend you not to change the interface if you already have any one of the three. This is because choosing another interface will not provide any added advantage in terms of performance.

But there have been scenarios where DVI becomes increasingly unsuitable. This mostly happens when the refresh rates and resolutions are higher than what DVI can handle. In such cases, do not hesitate to switch to the latest versions of DisplayPort or HDMI.

If you are a hard-core gamer, find out what refresh rate and resolution you are playing at. This is necessary as the interface you choose will depend on these factors. Also, check what connections are available on your monitor and graphics card.

The bottom line is that DVI works really well on a 1080p monitor for basic gaming, provided you don’t have as much expectation as with the other interfaces. Having a 1080p monitor and a DVI cable are enough to stick with DVI for as long as possible.
